The Cheshire Bonsai Society was founded in 1987 to help promote and educate interested people in Cheshire about the art form that is Bonsai. Since then we have grown in both size and wealth of knowledge, with decades of Bonsai experience under our belts. Our meetings are frequently attended by our resident Bonsai expert Simon Jones, as well as a once or twice yearly talk or critique by one of our founding members and renowned Bonsai artist, Chris Williams. At least once a year we also bring in a prominent outside Bonsai artist to give the members a talk on the latest techniques and methods of creating Bonsai.

The society began showing trees at the inaugural RHS Flower Show Tatton Park in 1999. We have shown at Tatton every year since (barring the 2020 cancelled year), winning medals ranging from Silver to Gold, including winning Best in Marquee in 2013 and 2019. We have also shown at the Shrewsbury Flower Show, winning many awards in the individual classes and have recently started attending the Arley Hall Garden Festival.

The society meets every month on the 3rd Monday, except in December where we meet on the 2nd Monday to prevent clashing with Christmas celebrations. Meetings around Easter are also sometimes moved, depending on when Easter Monday falls that year and will be noted in our programme of meetings on the Home Page. Everyone is welcome at our meetings, which for many years have been held at the Little Budworth Village Hall, a brilliant venue right in the centre of Cheshire. Meeting fees are £2 for members and £3.50 for visitors, increasing to £5 for outside speaker meetings. Tea and refreshments are provided part way through the meeting and are included in the fee.

Our meetings range from workshop meetings, which are a brilliant opportunity to work on your own trees, under expert guidance, in a heated and well lit venue, to Critiques where members provide trees for our expert hosting the critique to look at and offer advice on improvements, allowing the whole society to see and learn. We also occasionally run Auction / Bring and Buy sale meetings and The Club Shows.

The Cheshire Bonsai Society is also pleased to welcome back Phil Coombs, who frequently attends our meetings with his tables of Bonsai related items for sale, from very reasonably priced pots, to tools, wire and trees. Members sometimes also bring their own trees to sell via the society.
